ABOUT THE BOOK
Shola is a 17-year-old Nigerian intellectual prodigy with profound admiration for his country and the African continent.
Inspired by his biggest hero, Nelson Mandela, Shola arrives in Johannesburg to start his university education, and is immediately “drafted” into a friendship with Ebuka, a fast-talking, quick-thinking Nigerian maverick who would rather be back in Aba tending his car spare parts business.
Shola also finds love of the romantic kind in Malaika, a South African teen who has to battle her parents initial objections to follow her heart. Brought together by fate and a touch of “japa,” these three friends form an apparently odd but endearing partnership.
But life isn’t always fair, and tragedy looms for our idealistic trio.
Nnyema Beson Ekon has a crafted a gem of a story in Being Nigerian – The Spirit of Naija. This narrative, done in a smooth, fast-paced but touching style that is liberally laced with humor, belies Nnyema’s status as a first-time author. Pick up this novel, and you won’t be putting it down in a hurry.

Testimonials

İt was a very gripping book..And open ended..So I'll be waiting for the continuation..Prejudice and xenophobia... When these two concepts come together, they can lead to terrible consequences. How do they especially affect young people? This book tells the most striking example of this through Shola who is the Main character .

Benson Nnyema. Thank you so much for this book. Thank you so much for pouring out your heart into this book - Being Nigerian. So this evening, I just decided to read this everyone has been raving about. I just decided to take a walk to the park so I went with my laptop. I went there with my headset and I was reading this book. I got engrossed from the beginning. I couldn't leave the park until the park closed by 10 and they asked me to leave. I couldn't let out my emotions about the book in the public space. I had to come home to finish the remaining pages. Thank you so much. Most of the things I read here are things I can relate to. They are things that happened to me. In word if I should describe this book, I would say "reality at its peak". This is exactly what is happening to many Nigerians. This is it. Oh God, I feel so emotional. Ebuka didn't deserve what he went through. The stereotype that Nigerians are labelled badly is really sad.
